Ceramic Coating
Two ceramic-coating quotes can use similar language while covering completely different amounts of work.
One may include little more than washing and applying protection to the paint. Another may include decontamination, paint refinement, wheels-off preparation, glass, exterior plastics and ongoing maintenance support.
Price only becomes meaningful once the complete scope is understood.
The ceramic coating product itself is a small portion of what you are paying for. The majority of the cost reflects the labour, preparation, environment and expertise required to apply it correctly.
Two studios can use the same coating product and produce completely different results, because the preparation and application — not the bottle — determine the outcome.
A large SUV takes more time, more product and more effort to prepare and coat than a small hatchback. Vehicles with complex body shapes, large glass areas or intricate panels require additional care.
The condition of the paint before coating is one of the biggest price variables. A vehicle with heavy swirl marks requires paint correction before coating. A vehicle with clean, well-maintained paint may need only light refinement.
Correction is labour-intensive. A vehicle that needs a full two-step correction before coating will cost more than one that needs decontamination alone.
Before any coating is applied, the paint must be decontaminated. This removes bonded contamination — iron particles, tar, tree sap and industrial fallout — that would otherwise be sealed beneath the coating.
The level of decontamination required varies. A vehicle that has never been decontaminated and has been daily-driven for years will take longer than a new vehicle straight from delivery.
Coating the face of the wheels is straightforward. Removing the wheels to coat the barrel, inner faces and behind the spokes takes significantly more time — but provides protection where brake dust and contamination build up most.
Some quotes include wheels-off preparation. Others coat only the visible face. The price difference reflects the additional labour.
Some coating services include glass coating, exterior plastic restoration and coating, and interior fabric or leather protection. Others cover paint only.
Each additional surface adds time and product. Comparing quotes without checking which surfaces are included makes price comparison misleading.
Some coatings require a single layer. Others are designed for multiple layers, each requiring curing time before the next is applied. More layers mean more product, more time and more studio occupancy.
After application, a coating needs time to cure in a controlled environment. During this period, the studio space is occupied and cannot be used for other vehicles. This time is a real cost — not just waiting time.
Some coating services include warranty registration with the product manufacturer. This often requires evidence of correct preparation, application and curing — and may require maintenance inspections to remain valid.
A complete coating service includes aftercare guidance — the correct washing method, suitable products and a maintenance schedule. Some also include an aftercare kit with the products needed for ongoing maintenance.
A lower price often reflects a narrower scope. Less preparation, no correction, fewer surfaces and no ongoing support will always cost less. That does not make it poor value — but it does make it a different service.
Coating products are marketed with lifespan claims — three years, five years, seven years. But a long lifespan claim means little if the preparation beneath the coating is inadequate.
A well-prepared vehicle with a shorter-lifespan coating will outperform a poorly prepared vehicle with a longer-lifespan coating. Compare what is included before comparing the advertised duration.
Because paint condition, vehicle size and preparation requirements vary, final pricing is confirmed only after the vehicle has been inspected. This ensures the quote reflects the actual work required — not a generic estimate.
The right question is not simply, "How much is the coating?" It is, "What preparation, correction, coverage and support are included before and after the coating is applied?"
